Online For Authors Podcast
Winner of the 2024 Positive Change Podcast Awards for Best Host and Best Book Podcast. Online for Authors is the only podcast with a host that personally reads and reviews indie-written fiction and inspirational/memoirs for avid readers who want to add books for their TBR beyond what they can find on the NYT best sellers list. As an award-winning host, Teri M Brown’s goal for Online for Authors is to introduce avid readers to characters they’d like to invite to lunch. If you read more than 40 books per year and want to veer away from the NYT Best Seller’s List or want to expand beyond your preferred genre, Online for Authors can help you discover novels written by Indie-Authors to add to your to-be-read list. Teri M Brown is an author of character-driven fiction and lives for the moments her characters speak their stories to her. Recognizing that other authors also have interesting lives and reasons for writing, Teri uses Online for Authors as a space for these authors to shine. Avid readers listening to Online for Authors will have the opportunity to discover new authors, amazing characters, and “can’t stop reading” stories. Online for Authors releases a new episode featuring a guest interview each Tuesday morning at 6am ET. Tune in to be introduced to new and upcoming authors in a wide variety of fiction genres - from historical to fantasy to mystery to thriller to romance – as well as inspirational memoirs. If you are looking for the next book on your “to be read” pile, then this is the podcast for you. Listen as authors discuss their latest work (no spoilers!), the impetus behind the storyline, how/where/why they write, what’s coming up next, and more! These conversations are in-depth because, unlike many hosts, Teri takes the time to read and review each novel before interviewing her guests. She believes that by doing so, she can guarantee a good fit for her audience as well as an interesting and inquisitive interview. Additionally, the first Saturday of each month, Teri releases what she affectionately calls OFAU – Online for Authors University. These once-monthly episodes feature writing tips for authors in all stages of their careers and speaks directly to her desire to mentor others. Whether someone wants to know about editing, marketing, book awards, being a guest on a podcast, or how notebooking can help you overcome writer’s block, writers and aspiring writers will find useful tips to move their writing to the next level. Finally, Teri gathers experts for LIVE streams around topics of interest, such as why authors choose to use pen names, a behind the scenes look at audiobook creation, and more. These LIVE streams happen each 5th Tuesday at 7pm ET, in addition to various dates around specific bookish events.

My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Melissa C Diaferia, author of the book Sugar Plum and the Right Winger. Melissa is a talented independent romance author from Toronto, Ontario. Along with her passion for makeup artistry and nail design, Melissa enjoys writing as another creative outlet for her ideas and passions. Here, she is known to focus on her Italian heritage, musicality, sports, and her love for romance-based plots. Melissa also enjoys giving back to others in her community as she volunteers at her local church to further spread the love and joy she has in her heart.
In my book review, I stated Sugar Plum and the Right Winger is a clean, quick-read romance. This novella features Bea, a ballerina, and Teo, a Toronto Blues hockey player.
As with any good romance, neither Bea nor Teo are completely honest about their attraction. Plus, Bea is keeping a secret, one that could stop the romance in its tracks before it really gets started.
One thing I really enjoyed was that the novella includes songs and Melissa provides readers with the song list - including numbers from the Broadway musical, Hamilton, as well as singers like Elvis, Bocelli, and Michael Bublé. Sugar Plum and the Right Winger is the first in the Toronto Blues series.
And BTW, the Toronto Blues is not a real NHL hockey team. The real Toronto team is the Maple Leafs. And yes, I had to look that up!

My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is V.S. Gardner, author of the book A Killing on Hardee Street. VS Gardner excitedly achieved her lifelong dream of becoming a published author when her first novel, A Killing on Hardee Street, was published in 2020. Holding to the belief that life’s greatest treasures are found in relationships, V.S. Gardner enjoys spending time with family and friends. When not writing, she enjoys reading, thrifting, exploring local points of interest, and trail walking. She is grateful for the many blessings of life. Be sure to follow the Author on Amazon for future publications.
In my book review, I stated A Killing on Hardee Street is the first in a series located in Logan, South Carolina, a small town not too far from Myrtle Beach. In fact, this tiny town is patterned after V.S. Gardner's hometown!
In this novel, we meet Vonda, a recent widow trying to adjust to her new circumstances. We also meet Marshall and get introduced to his family and his construction company. As Vonda watches new homes being built from her back deck, she sees something she wasn't supposed to see - and this lands her in the thick of a mysterious disappearance. Will she be next?
I enjoyed the easy tone of this Cozy Mystery, and you will, too!

My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Gail Priest, author of the book Soul Dancing. Gail has a passion for women’s fiction. Her degrees and work in theatre and counseling psychology inspire her stories of healing from trauma and secrets within families. A dash of romance and her love of second chances are always in the mix. The settings of her novels are influenced by her time spent on the coast of New Jersey and the Eastern Shore of Maryland.
Gail Priest’s newest novel, Soul Dancing, was an American Fiction Awards semi-finalist for Women’s Fiction. Firebird Book Awards has awarded it first place in Cross Genre and second place is Women’s Fiction. Gail is also the author of the Annie Crow Knoll trilogy which includes Annie Crow Knoll: Sunrise, Sunset, and Moonrise. The final novel was a Kindle Book Awards semi-finalist. Eastern Shore Shorts, her collection of short stories set in various Eastern Shore towns, was a finalist in the International Book Awards Short Story category.
Gail is a member of The Women’s Fiction Writers Association, Eastern Shore Writers Association, Novelitics Writers Collective, and the South Jersey Writers Group, where she was named Writer of the Year. Gail lives in New Jersey with her husband and their Havanese dog, Annie. When she’s not writing or teaching, Gail can be found reading or looking for birds and sea glass along the beaches and bays of the East Coast.
In my book review, I stated Soul Dancing is a delightful woman's fiction with a bit of romance and a paranormal twist! And quite frankly, I LOVED this cross-genre experiment!
Shirlene is a 90-year-old woman dying of cancer. Rain is a 20-year-old drug addict giving birth. Both women die, but Shirlene refuses to go toward the light. However, she dwells long enough that she can't return to her old body, instead finding herself in L&D in the final stages of labor.
Imagine this classy, reserved, older woman finding herself in the body of a young woman with tattoos and piercings - and then trying to explain to those she loves what has happened. Throw in her husband's death bed confession, romantic feelings toward Cameron, the uncle willing to raise his brother's baby, and an old friend who pushes Shirlene to take second chances, and you have an amazing novel that will make you shake your head, laugh, cry, and cheer for redemption.
I couldn't put this award-winning book down - and I'm betting you won't be able to either!

My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Mark R Anderson, author of the book Sage Among the Pines. Mark, a Fulton Books author, retired after thirty-five years of distinguished service in the Department of Defense and ten years, concurrently, as an officer in the United States Navy Reserve. He completed his most recent book, Sage Among the Pines.
A graduate of the University of Maryland and the National Intelligence University, Mark’s upbringing in a military family instilled a love for travel and exploration, shaping his diverse perspectives and providing rich material for his creative works. Currently, the author resides in Pinehurst, North Carolina, with his wife and youngest daughter. In his spare time, Mark is an avid golfer at Pinehurst Country Club and enjoys filming book videos, alongside indulging in freshwater bass fishing across the Southeastern US.
In my book review, I stated that I was excited to read this book before it came out on the shelves. Tom and Cynthia, along with their daughter, Lexi, have a great life. Until. Tom makes a mistake. Cynthia can't forgive him. No one tells Lexi what is going on. And then, without warning, Tom dies in a military training exercise. As Cynthia spirals into depression, her daughter spirals into adolescent rage. Only a sage among the pines, in the form of a grandfather-grandmother duo, can save them.
This is a healing journey - healing from loss and betrayal - as well as a forgiveness journey. It shows how complicated life can become, even when people truly love one another. I enjoyed Mark's book because his characters are real. If you enjoy character-driven fiction, then this one is for you.

My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Catherine W Rouhana, author of the book When the Fudge Trees Bloom. Cathy grew up in the ’50s and ‘60s in a three-bedroom row house in Baltimore, Maryland. She was the second of ten children, seven girls, and three boys. Yikes! You might say. Somewhat cramped? Well, yes, in retrospect. But children can always find a cubby hide-away to escape the chaos, (and maybe the chores). In the days before social media and even the days of the infancy of television, she and her siblings escaped into books. They were voracious readers and fought over the treasures brought home from a three-mile hike to the nearest library. Of course, the hiker had first dibs, but the rest was up for grabs.
The ‘70s brought marriage to her Lebanese husband and their first child. Books were still front and center with a job as a children’s librarian/head of agency at a branch of the prestigious Enoch Pratt Free Library. This was soon followed by the opening of The Bookmark, an independent bookstore, with her friend and fellow librarian, Janice. But not to stay in one thing for too long, the “80s brought their second son and an offer to Nagib to work in Saudi Arabia. They accepted, and their adventure began.
Back and forth in the Middle East, between Lebanon, Nagib’s country of origin, and Saudi Arabia. From heat and humidity and daily sameness to fresh mountain breezes punctuated by intermittent bombings.
She returned to the States in the late ‘80s but maintained one foot in the Middle East. Retirement from her position as manager in a medical office gave her the time and space she needed to complete the book she had been writing (slowly) for the past twenty years. When the Fudge Trees Bloom: Memories of an American in the Middle East is her first book, but, she hopes, not her last.
In my book review, I stated When the Fudge Trees Bloom is an amazing memoir. Catherine spent many years of her adult life in Saudi Arabia and Lebanon. However, the person she was when she left the US as a young mother and wife to a Lebanese citizen, and the person she was when she entered Lebanon again when her son got married were two very different women.
I learned a lot about the unrest in the Middle East in the 70s and 80s. I also learned a lot about living life in the closed society of Saudi Arabia and family traditions in Lebanon. This memoir made me wonder how I would have handled the many wars, the political upheaval, the idea that women are second class citizens, and simply the loneliness of being far from home.
In the end, I fell in love with Lebanon - at least the Lebanon known to Catherine's family. The one not torn to shreds by war.

My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Barbara Dullaghan, author of the book, Secrets in the Hollow. Barbara Dullaghan grew up in Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown and is enthralled with the magic and energy of the towns. She is published in gifted education with Kendall Hunt and Prufrock Press and her short stories and poetry can be found in three anthologies. She and her husband, Jack, now live in coastal North Carolina and love spending time at the beach with their three children, spouses, and six energetic grandchildren.
In my book review, I stated Secrets in the Hollow is a debut mystery set in the small town of Sleepy Hollow. Not only does the storyline follow Carrie Peters - a woman of forty who has yet to figure out her life because she has been hiding her past, but it also provides readers with a great sense of place.
Throughout the story, we learn of the history of Sleepy Hollow, its cemetery, and its ghosts. At the same time, we learn of Carrie's secrets - her own personal ghosts that haunt every waking minute.
What happens when secrets finally come out? Do friendships remain? Can Carrie find her happily-ever-after?
I enjoyed Barbara’s first novel, and those who enjoy mystery will certainly find this to be a good read.

My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Catherine Butterfield, author of the book, The Serpent and the Rose. Catherine was born in Manhattan but raised primarily in Minnesota and Massachusetts. (The Three M's) She was a skinny kid with miserable allergies and spent most of her youth indoors reading books. Her two biggest influences at that point were J.D. Salinger and Anne Frank.
As an actress, she spent her early career acting regionally and then started writing for the stage. Her first break as a playwright came with the Manhattan Theatre Club production of JOINED AT THE HEAD, which she wrote and starred in, leading to other productions of her plays in the city and the beginnings of her TV career. Though relocated to Los Angeles, she never stopped writing plays; so far ten of them have been produced and published.
During the pandemic she and husband RON WEST created over 60 short films for a series entitled LIFE DURING LOCKDOWN, which can be seen under her name on Youtube. Recently, she has written her first novel, "The Serpent and the Rose," about the French queen Marguerite de Valois and her lifelong battle with her mother, Catherine de Medici.
She lives in Santa Monica with Ron West and their cat, Pandita. Her daughter is the actress Audrey Corsa.
In my book review, I stated that Marguerite began life as a French princess, became the Queen of Navarre through marriage, and chose to remove herself from that marriage as her husband became King of France.
We follow Marguerite's life through journal entries, allowing us to see her dysfunctional family and the craziness of court life from her point of view. I loved that this was written in first person and in present tense - an unusual POV for a historical fiction novel - because I became quite attached to Marguerite and her quick wit and dry sense of humor.
I typically do not care for books written about this period of time because I get slogged down in the details of a history I can't keep straight and names that mean nothing to me. However, Butterfield did an amazing job keeping readers engaged with salient facts, a quick tempo, and dashes of humor. I loved this book and highly recommend it to anyone who loves historical fiction and a good laugh.

My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Joel David Bond, author of the book As Large As Your Spirit: A Reverse Refugee Memoir. A born explorer, Joel has spent over two decades living and working around the world, from farm work in Italian vineyards to jet-setting as a London-based flight attendant. His recent work in Iraqi Kurdistan built bridges between some of the region’s most elite students and the locally marginalized refugee community through service-learning.
He holds a Master’s in Education from the University of Nottingham, UK. His essay, “Amazing Grace,” was shortlisted for the 2022 Annie Dillard Award for Creative Nonfiction.
Bond is available for interviews as well as speaking engagements and events on topics of refugee rights, education in post-conflict societies, life & culture in Iraqi Kurdistan, or travel-related topics.
In my book review, I stated As Large as Your Spirit looks at Joel's life during a five-month forced stay on a Greek Island during the pandemic. Although at first glance, being stranded on a Greek Island sounds idyllic, readers soon realize that being trapped anywhere against your wishes is difficult.
Though the setting is beautiful, Joel finds himself without friends, without access to funds, and with limited access to the internet during a time when governments limited a person's ability to travel or even interact outside their own home. In essence, Joel found himself a refugee, but one wishing to go back to the east while most refugees were leaving the east to head west.
The book is about finding a place to call home - both physically and within oneself. It showcases the plight of refugees, unlike Joel, who had to flee from their home and must now find ways to make new lands their own. We even get a peek at Roma's, people who, though they live in a country, are not accepted as true citizens.
This is a great memoir that will make you think about what it means to be a refugee and what you can do to eliminate your own biases. Great read.

My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Dani Pettrey, author of the book One Wrong Move. Dani has sold nearly 800,000 copies of her novels to readers eagerly awaiting the next release. Dani combines the page-turning adrenaline of a thriller with the chemistry and happy-ever-after of a romance.
Her novels stand out for their "wicked pace, snappy dialogue, and likable characters" (Publishers Weekly), "gripping storyline[s]," (RT Book Reviews), and "sizzling undercurrent of romance" (USA Today).
Her Alaskan Courage, Chesapeake Valor, and Coastal Guardian series have received praise from readers and critics alike. She's been honored with multiple awards, including the Daphne du Maurier Award, two HOLT Medallions, a two-time Christy Award finalist, two National Readers' Choice Awards, the Gail Wilson Award of Excellence, and Christian Retailing's Best Award.
From her early years eagerly reading Nancy Drew mysteries, to paging through Agatha Christie novels or watching on-the-edge-of-her-seat adventure movies, Dani has always enjoyed mystery and suspense. She considers herself blessed to be able to write the kind of stories she loves--full of plot twists and peril, love, and longing for hope and redemption. Her greatest joy as an author is sharing the stories God lays on her heart. She researches murder and mayhem from her home in Maryland, where she lives with her husband.
In my book review, I stated that One Wrong Move is a Christian Mystery and Suspense with a great side of romance. Andi is ex-FBI because of what the higher-ups called a botched job. She now works as an investigator for an insurance company. After a gallery heist, she meets Christian, a security expert and private investigator who installed the gallery's security system.
Immediately, the two find themselves in the middle of some strange game with the thief or thieves who leave riddles for them to find. Unfortunately, the object of the "game" seems to include the demise of both Christian and Andi.
As they dodge one attempt on their life after another, Andi and Christian have to face their feelings for one another as well as the mistakes in their pasts. Will Andi be vindicated? Can Christian convince Andi that he is on the up and up? Or will those intent on killing them win before they know?
